Join Us in Shaping the Economic Future: Your Insights Matter!
Young people today are confronting a future shaped by complex economic forces—policies made behind closed doors, markets swayed by a single tweet, and a planet under the pressure of unsustainable growth. In partnership with the London Doughnut Economics Coalition, this research project seeks to invite them into the conversation.
Why is this important?
The Gap in Economics Education
Schools teach personal finance (DfE, 2022) but often avoid critiquing the systems behind it. Personal finance is crucial, but it’s only part of the picture. Hütten et al. argue that most financial literacy programs overlook deeper issues—like whether finance truly serves society or perpetuates unchecked power. They call for civil society to step in and reshape these programs, addressing the systemic concerns we can’t afford to ignore.
The Polycrisis Context
Navigating a Complex Landscape
Today’s youth are growing up in what we might call a ‘polycrisis’—a tangled web of economic, environmental, and political challenges. From the fallout of financial crises to the looming threat of climate change, these aren’t isolated issues—they’re deeply interconnected. To understand one, you must understand them all.
What is the ideal outcome?
A critical economic capability program
We’re not offering just another course on budgeting or money management. While important, it does not provide the skills to understand the economic world they’re inheriting. We’re talking about critical economic capability—knowledge that goes beyond the personal and dives into the structural. It’s about understanding who holds power, how it’s wielded, and what can be done to make it more equitable.
